YOUR COMFORT IS OUR CARE

Comfort Center

– Making painful injections a thing of the past –

We are continuously striving to make your visit more comfortable and pain-free. For many people, the fear of dentistry starts with the injection. We take several steps to help drastically reduce the pain of the injection, and if possible, eliminate it.

1) High strength numbing gel

- We use a topical numbing gel that sits on the area of the injection beforehand. The gel is 20% Benzocaine, a very effective numbing agent so that you can’t feel the first pinch with injections.

2) Warmed anesthetic

- One reason injections hurt is due to the fact that anesthetics are usually used at room temperature. Our anesthetics get their very own electric blanket before being used on each patient. Studies have shown that bringing the anesthetic up to body temperature before being put in the body reduces the pain that you would feel with a colder anesthetic.

3) Multiple types of anesthetic

-  Another reason injections hurt so much is due to the pH of the anesthetic. The anesthetics most dentists use have a lower pH than the body, and this acidity causes the pain. Due to this, we first use a different anesthetic with a pH that is similar to the body to get the area numb. However, this anesthetic does not last as long, so after you are numb we add a longer-lasting anesthetic for day's procedure. It may seem counter intuitive that to reduce injection pain we do two injections. However, we’ve found people feel much less pain by doing a gentle injection first and letting the area numb first.

Sedation Options
We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for procedures. Laughing gas can help relax you and take the edge off if you are nervous about a procedure. It is a very safe and easy way to help with dental anxiety.

Another option is anti-anxiety medication taken an hour before the procedure. This option also helps to reduce anxiety and works to make you more comfortable without reducing your awareness. Keep in mind you will need a driver for the day!

We also offer the combination of nitrous oxide and anti-anxiety medication. These two options amplify each other and work together to increase sedation. This option also requires a driver for the day.

For all of these options we will review your medical history and work with you to make sure these are safe options for you.

Comfort Options
We offer blankets and pillows to help make you more comfortable in the chair- just ask!  Feel free to grab a complimentary beverage in our waiting room when you arrive.
